FG Clarifies Medical Fellowship Not Equivalent to PhD

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Education, clarified that medical fellowships do not equate to PhD degrees. This clarification was issued after widespread media misinterpretations of a Federal Executive Council decision that allowed the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College to seek accreditation from the National Universities Commission to award PhD degrees in relevant medical research disciplines.

The statement, released by Folasad Boriowo, the Ministry's Director of Press and Public Relations, emphasized that the approval was intended to expand the academic mandate of the college rather than alter the status of medical fellowship qualifications. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, noted that the reports suggesting that PhD degrees would replace medical fellowships were incorrect.

He reiterated that medical fellowships remain distinct higher professional qualifications required for specialist clinical practice, and the council's decision merely broadens the college's academic role to include the potential for PhD research programs.
