FG Clarifies Medical Fellowship Not Equivalent to PhD

The Nigerian government clarified that medical fellowships do not equate to PhD degrees following widespread reports suggesting otherwise. On Wednesday, the Federal Executive Council, led by President Bola Tinubu, approved the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College to seek accreditation from the National Universities Commission to award PhDs in relevant medical research disciplines.

Maruf Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized that this decision was misinterpreted by the media, which suggested that PhDs would replace medical fellowships. Alausa stated that medical fellowships remain distinct qualifications necessary for specialist clinical practice and that the council's decision merely expands the college's academic mandate.

The college will be able to offer PhD programs for candidates wishing to pursue advanced research alongside their professional medical training. This initiative aims to enhance Nigeria's capacity for medical research and align with international standards without diminishing the value of existing medical fellowships.
