Medical Lab Scientists Reject Health Bills Over Safety

Medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria, represented by AMLSN President Casmir Ifeanyi, have expressed strong opposition to proposed health bills, particularly Bill HB 2701, which they argue does not align with global best practices. Ifeanyi highlighted concerns regarding amendments to the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) Act, specifically those affecting the composition of its governing board.

He warned that these changes could distort the existing regulatory structure and undermine the expertise necessary for laboratory science leadership, which is critical for patient care. Ifeanyi emphasized that 70% of clinical decisions rely on laboratory data, stressing the need for clarity in roles to avoid legal uncertainties.

He urged lawmakers to ensure that reforms maintain professional standards and legal frameworks, cautioning that the proposed amendments could lead to regulatory instability and conflicts. The AMLSN called for a suspension of legislative actions on the bill to allow for broader stakeholder consultation and alignment with global scientific standards.
