Key Candidates Emerge for Nigeria's 2027 Presidential Race

As Nigeria approaches the January 16, 2027, general elections, political activities are intensifying with 22 registered parties. At least 10 have declared presidential candidates.

The incumbent president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), seeks re-election after serving as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. Other notable candidates include Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, representing a faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and long-time PDP member.

Dumebi Kachikwu leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Omoyele Sowore represents the African Action Congress (AAC). Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has emerged as the candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after defecting from the Labour Party.
