First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Launches Initiative for Girls' Education

On October 13, Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, emphasized that menstrual hygiene challenges should not obstruct girls' education. She launched the Flow with Confidence 2.0 initiative, which includes distributing two million packs of sanitary towels and educational materials to girls in public basic education schools across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This initiative coincides with the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child. Mrs Tinubu announced a ₦2 billion Learners Retention Support Programme, aimed at alleviating financial barriers to education.
The first phase of this initiative previously provided a one-year supply of sanitary pads to 370,000 schoolgirls in rural areas. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, pledged to institutionalize menstrual hygiene support in basic education through UBEC and the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).
Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, and UBEC's Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, also supported the initiative, emphasizing the importance of creating a conducive learning environment for girls.
