Niger State Governor Bago Enforces Curfew After Miners' Deaths

Niger State Governor Bago announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM to prevent further violence following the deaths of 37 artisanal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The deceased miners, aged between 14 and 18 years, reportedly suffered from suffocation and dehydration, with forensic reports indicating signs of distress on their bodies.

Governor Bago criticized the NSCDC for detaining 67 individuals for over 24 hours, leading to tragic outcomes. He expressed gratitude for the suspension of the state Commandant responsible for the arrests.

The governor also announced a ban on mining activities in the state and urged citizens to remain calm while investigations into the incident are conducted. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as unfortunate and assured that the federal government would collaborate with the state to ensure justice is served.
