Niger State Governor Bago Imposes Curfew After Miners' Deaths

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago declared a 24-hour curfew across the state capital after protests erupted over the deaths of 37 artisanal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The governor described the protesters as vandals, who caused significant destruction, including attacking a bank and ransacking businesses.

During a condolence visit from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Bago revealed preliminary forensic findings indicating possible poisoning from hazardous substances. He ordered an immediate suspension of all mining activities until soil tests confirm the presence of dangerous materials.

Bago condemned the actions of the NSCDC officers responsible for the prolonged detention of the miners, stating their negligence contributed to the tragedy. He urged residents to remain calm while security forces worked to restore order.

The Minister assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to hold accountable those responsible for the miners' deaths.
