Atiku Abubakar Demands Answers on 37 Deaths in Custody

Atiku Abubakar, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, has called for accountability from President Bola Tinubu, Dele Alake, and Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo concerning the deaths of 37 Nigerians who were arrested and detained by government agents. Atiku emphasized that these individuals, many of whom were teenagers, entered government custody alive but died while detained.

He criticized the Tinubu administration for failing to provide a satisfactory explanation for these deaths, which occurred under state authority. Atiku highlighted that the victims were not casualties of terrorism or crime but died in a government facility.

He demanded an independent criminal investigation into the allegations of overcrowding and poor conditions in the detention facility. He also pointed out the need for the same accountability standards applied in previous tragedies, such as the 2014 Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment incident.
