Gemstone Miners Association Advocates for Gemology Studies
During the Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja, stakeholders called for the incorporation of Gemology studies into the Geology curriculum of higher institutions. Engr Adeniran Ajibade, president of the Gemstone Miners Association of Nigeria, highlighted the abundance of gemstones in the country and their global demand.
He noted that currently, only the University of Abuja offers such studies, with students in their third year. Ajibade mentioned that the government and key stakeholders are organizing gemstone miners into cooperatives to standardize operations, ensuring compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations.
Mr Tope Adebanjo, CEO of Laural School of Miners, stressed the importance of developing entrepreneurs in the gemstone sector to enhance local deposits and prevent resource exportation. The summit included discussions on the impact of solid minerals export on national development and community relations in mining.
A communique is expected to follow the two-day event.
