MMELI Arts Foundation Empowers Women Writers in Lagos

The MMELI Arts Foundation, in partnership with Alliance Française de Lagos, organized a capacity-building workshop for women writers in Lagos. This workshop, held to mark International Women’s Day 2026, was themed "Women, Word, Wealth," and aimed to explore creative identities and develop pathways for women in storytelling and publishing.

The sessions featured prominent figures such as filmmaker Phoenix Ezendu and award-winning author Richard Mofe-Damijo, who emphasized the importance of refining writing practices and clarifying steps needed to draft public commissions. Nina Anyianuka, another key participant, contributed to the design of the sessions, which sought to strengthen the participation of women in the fast-growing creative landscape.

Mofe-Damijo, who serves as the chairman of the foundation, highlighted the necessity of stronger support structures to sustain the creative sector, including training networks that enable practitioners to develop their work beyond local markets. The initiative also aimed to encourage participants to share authentic stories that challenge stereotypes and reflect real-life experiences.
