NASS Advances State Police, Tinubu Warns Terror Financiers

On June 12, the National Assembly of Nigeria took a significant step towards decentralizing police power by advancing the creation of state police. The House of Representatives passed a bill with 289 members voting in favor out of 290 present.

In a related event, President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on Democracy Day, issuing a stern warning to financiers of terrorism and banditry, stating they will face severe consequences. He emphasized the government's security gains, including the neutralization of 13,000 terrorists and an 81% reduction in terrorism-related deaths since 2015.

Additionally, the Senate directed security agencies to arrest bandits and terrorists who openly display cash on social media platforms, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio describing such displays as a direct affront to state authority.
