Severe Gridlock Hits Benin–Lagos Highway, Motorists Stranded

Motorists traveling on the Benin–Lagos highway are facing significant gridlock, particularly at the Ovia River Bridge, where they have been stranded for up to seven hours. Due to the heavy traffic, many drivers are forced to turn back at Okada Junction and take the Iguobazuwa route, commonly referred to as the old road.

The uneven road surface near the bridge has contributed to accidents, and motorists have reported burning extra fuel due to the detours. Felix Akhabu, the Edo State Commissioner for Works, has stated that the Ministry of Works is aware of the situation and is in contact with the Federal Ministry of Works to address the issues.

Babatunde Tajudeen, the Comptroller of the Federal Ministry of Works, noted that there is no structural defect at the Ovia River Bridge, but heavy-duty trucks are not exercising patience, worsening the situation. The Edo State House of Assembly has previously written to the ministry regarding concerns about the highway's condition.
