Nigerian Judge Faces Backlash for Kneeling Order in Court

In a recent court session, Judge Maham Umar of the Federal High Court in Nigeria ordered defense counsel Marshal Abubakar to kneel down as a punishment for contempt during the trial of Omoyele Sowore, who is facing charges from the state security service. This incident occurred on March 16, 2023, amidst a contentious exchange regarding the defense's no-case submission.

The Nigerian Bar Association, led by President Afam Osigwe, issued a statement condemning the judge's actions, asserting that no legal practitioner should be subjected to such humiliation, which contradicts the standards of judicial conduct and human dignity as outlined in Section 34 of Nigeria's Constitution. The Uganda Law Society, represented by President Isaac Ssemakadd, also criticized the judge's authority to impose such a punishment, highlighting the need for respect within the judicial system and the protection of legal practitioners' rights.
