Arewa Think Tank Calls for Probe into INEC's ₦126bn Allegation

The Arewa Think Tank has urged for a thorough investigation into allegations of ₦126.46 billion financial irregularities against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as cited by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The group's Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, cautioned against directly linking these allegations to INEC's current chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, until a proper investigation is conducted.

SERAP issued a letter on September 12, 2026, demanding that INEC account for the alleged mismanagement and irregularities, which were highlighted in the 2023 audited report by the Auditor-General of the Federation. The report raised concerns over expenditures related to ballot boxes and electoral materials, among others.

Yakubu emphasized the importance of identifying the officials responsible for the transactions, which primarily occurred between January and December 2022, and in some cases, extending to December 2023. He stated that accountability is crucial and that no one should be shielded from financial misconduct.
