House of Reps Signals Imminent Payments to Contractors

The House of Representatives has signaled that payments to contractors, amounting to N1.8 trillion, are expected soon. This announcement comes as the federal government has earmarked N1.8 trillion in the 2026 appropriations bill to settle outstanding liabilities to contractors, including N1.7 trillion allocated for capital projects in the 2024 fiscal year.

Lawmakers, including Sada Soli from Katsina State and Ikenga Ugochinyer from Imo State, expressed cautious optimism regarding the release of funds, which they hope will alleviate the financial strain on contractors who have struggled to deliver projects due to payment delays. The situation has led to widespread dissatisfaction among contractors, prompting protests at the National Assembly complex in late 2025 and early 2026.

Despite repeated assurances from the Ministry of Finance, led by Wale Edun, the actual disbursement of funds has not materialized, exacerbating frustrations among lawmakers and contractors alike.
