AON Urges NCAA to Collect 5% Ticket Charge Directly

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to implement a system that collects a 5% ticket sales charge directly from passengers. This request arises from the NCAA's current debt of N20 billion, which has resulted in fiscal incapacity, including the inability to pay its 1,500 workforce.

AON argues that collecting this charge directly from passengers would help resolve ongoing financial issues faced by airlines. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, noted that while current laws require airlines to collect this charge on behalf of the NCAA, a change in legislation could allow for direct collection.

The AON also highlighted the impact of rising aviation fuel prices due to geopolitical tensions, which has increased operational costs. Captain Chris Najomo and Festus Keyamo were involved in discussions regarding these financial challenges and potential solutions.
