N24 Billion Public Projects Abandoned Across Nigeria

A report by BudgIT, titled "People, Government, Oversight: Connecting the Dots on Service Delivery," unveiled in February 2026, indicates that N24 billion worth of public projects have been abandoned in various Nigerian states. The analysis shows that Benue State has the highest abandonment rate at 40%, followed by Ondo State at 32.4%, and Kwara State at 30.4%.

The report highlights that 17 states recorded no abandoned projects during the tracking period. It expresses concern over fraudulent delivery of projects, citing irregularities such as diversions of project funds and the execution of substandard projects.

The report also notes that Benue State's revenue increased modestly from N19.1 billion to N20.4 billion, despite 22% of tracked projects being abandoned. The 2024 federal budget allocates N607 million to Benue for projects valued at N191.33 billion, reflecting a 243.15% increase from the previous year.
