Court Remands Abubakar Malami and Family Over N8.7bn Fraud

On January 7, 2024, Justice Joyc Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the remand of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, along with his wife Asab and son Abubakar Abdulazeez, in prison following their re-arraignment on corruption charges amounting to N8.7 billion. The court directed that Malami be held at Kuje Prison in Abuja, while his wife was ordered to be remanded at Suleja Prison in Niger State.

During the proceedings, Malami's counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, drew the court's attention to a previous bail grant of N500 million, which included strict conditions for property documentation and travel papers. However, Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the previous proceedings were legally terminated, and Daudu's attempt to file a fresh oral bail application was rejected.

The court has scheduled March 6 for arguments regarding the bail application and trial.
