NAFDAC Defends Sachet Alcohol Ban for Child Protection in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria is upholding the ban on sachet alcohol to safeguard children from the dangers of high-alcohol content packaged in small sachets. NAFDAC Director-General, Prof.

Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the ban is not intended to harm businesses but to prioritize child protection. The agency initiated discussions with manufacturers to reduce alcohol concentration and package sizes, leading to a moratorium agreement until January 13, 2024.

Despite industry objections, the ban remains in place, with enforcement efforts ongoing. Adeyeye highlighted the ease of concealing sachets and the risks of underage drinking, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to protect children.

The ban targets sachet lines rather than entire companies, focusing on child safety and responsible alcohol consumption.
