NAFDAC Defends Ban on Sachet Alcohol to Protect Children's Health

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) defends its decision to ban sachet alcohol in Nigeria to safeguard children's health and prevent potential alcohol addiction. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Adeyeye, prioritizes children's safety over commercial interests, citing the need to protect future generations from alcohol-related harm.

NAFDAC's regulatory mandate covers food products, and the agency has not imposed a blanket ban on alcohol. Adeyeye refutes allegations of a court order halting the ban enforcement, stating that NAFDAC continues its enforcement activities based on legislative backing.

The agency raised concerns about high alcohol concentrations in sachet products, prompting the ban until January 31, 2024, with a possible extension to December 2025. Despite opposition from manufacturers seeking further extensions, NAFDAC remains firm on the ban to address underage drinking issues and align with international obligations.

Adeyeye clarifies that NAFDAC targets specific product lines rather than entire companies, emphasizing the importance of curbing underage alcohol consumption.
