NAFDAC Links Ondo State Deaths to Methanol Poisoning

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that recent deaths in Ondo State are due to high methanol intoxication from locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions. Laboratory analyses revealed high concentrations of methanol in 11 out of 15 samples collected from affected communities, including New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, and Oniparaga, with the outbreak particularly severe in Odigbo Town and Araromi-Obu.

As of September 17, 2026, there have been 182 reported cases and 48 deaths, with initial reports indicating 31 deaths. Among the affected, 90 were admitted and discharged, while six remain hospitalized.

Symptoms reported include headache, weakness, visual disturbances, and altered consciousness. NAFDAC's acute oral toxicity tests indicated significant toxicity, leading to the arrest of 15 individuals connected to the production and distribution of the contaminated beverages.

Further testing is ongoing to assess methanol levels and identify other toxic agents.
