NAFDAC Reports 48 Deaths from Toxic Alcohol in Ondo

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) reported 48 deaths and 182 illness cases associated with the consumption of locally made alcoholic and herbal concoctions in Ondo State's Odigbo Local Government Area. The outbreak has also spread to Irele Local Government Area, affecting communities such as New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, and Oniparaga, with Odigbo Town and Araromi-Obu being the worst affected.

As of September 17, 2026, of the 182 cases, 90 patients were hospitalized and discharged, 31 were treated as outpatients, and 6 remain hospitalized. Symptoms included severe headaches, body pain, breathing difficulties, and visual disturbances.

NAFDAC conducted tests on 15 unlabelled samples, finding 11 positive for cannabis indica and high methanol concentrations, which is highly toxic. Six samples caused significant mortality in laboratory mice.

Authorities arrested 15 suspects involved in producing and distributing the drinks. NAFDAC urged the public to avoid unlicensed alcoholic beverages and seek emergency care for severe symptoms.
