NAFDAC Destroys ₦1 Trillion in Counterfeit Drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), under the leadership of Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, has made significant strides in combating counterfeit drugs in Nigeria.

The agency reported the destruction of illicit drugs valued at ₦1 trillion as part of a nationwide enforcement operation against substandard and falsified products. In 2025 alone, NAFDAC arrested 114 suspects, with 16 cases referred for legal action.

Prof. Adeyeye highlighted the importance of moving beyond routine inspections to a more intelligence-driven enforcement regime aimed at dismantling criminal supply chains.

The agency's efforts have led to the seizure of 138 truckloads of substandard medicines and the closure of several illegal operations. NAFDAC's enforcement strategy is evolving to tackle emerging threats, including unregulated online markets for medicines.

The agency is collaborating with various security and regulatory bodies to enhance its operations, emphasizing the need for legislative amendments to strengthen penalties against counterfeit drug offenses.
