Nigerian Court Sets June Deadline for Conclusion of Emefiele's Naira Redesign Trial

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has scheduled ten fresh hearing dates to conclude the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is facing charges related to the redesign of the Naira. The trial, initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is being presided over by Justice Maryann Anenih.

The court set the hearing dates following an agreement between the EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo SAN and Emefiele's lawyer Olalekan Ojo SAN. The trial commenced in 2024, and witnesses, including Chinedu, head of an inter-agency probe panel investigating Emefiele, have testified.

Chinedu disclosed that the redesign of the Naira was approved by late President Muhammadu Buhari but clarified that the printing was to be done locally, contrary to allegations of printing abroad. Emefiele made six extrajudicial statements during the probe panel sessions.

The trial continues with Emefiele pleading not guilty to the charges.
