Emefiele's Naira Redesign Trial Set for February 2024

The legal proceedings against former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele concerning the naira redesign policy are nearing conclusion, as Justice Maryann Anenih has set a 10-day trial schedule to resolve the case. The trial will take place in the Federal Capital Territory and is scheduled to run from February to June 2026.

Emefiele faces charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleging that his handling of the 2022 currency overhaul caused significant economic injury and violated laws. The trial is expected to begin on February 3, 2024, with cross-examination of EFCC witnesses.

Emefiele's defense hinges on a written approval from President Muhammadu Buhari for the naira redesign, although it is claimed that this approval had specific conditions that were allegedly violated. The EFCC has presented video evidence showing the economic hardships caused by the policy's rollout, which led to severe cash shortages.

Emefiele has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
