NANS Calls for Youth-Friendly Policing from New IG

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to implement youth-friendly policing across Nigeria. In a statement signed by the Southwest Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, the group expressed dissatisfaction with the previous policing climate under former IG Kayode Egbetokun, citing issues such as harassment, arbitrary stops, unlawful detentions, and extortion.

They emphasized the need for genuine measures to reform the police system, ensuring accountability and respect for human rights. NANS highlighted that students have often felt more like targets than partners with law enforcement, leading to a climate of mistrust.

The group warned that the erosion of trust between students and the police poses risks to national stability. They called for institutional dialogue, specialized training for officers, and transparent handling of complaints.

NANS pledged to monitor the developments under the new leadership and continue advocating for the protection of students' rights and dignity.
