WAYPAN Advocates for Youth Rights Under New IGP Disu

The West African Youth Protect Advocacy Network (WAYPAN) congratulated Mr. Tunji Disu on his recent appointment as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

In a statement, the organization outlined key priorities for the new IGP, focusing on safeguarding the rights of youth in Nigeria. They highlighted ongoing issues such as police harassment, unlawful arrests, and wrongful profiling, particularly concerning the enforcement of the cybercrime law set to prosecute young individuals in 2024.

WAYPAN condemned the misuse of digital platforms for blackmail and fraud, noting that police handling of cybercrime often borders on civil disputes rather than criminal offenses. They called for comprehensive police reforms, especially in light of recent allegations of police misconduct during peaceful protests in Lagos State.

WAYPAN urged Mr. Disu to review cases of rights violations involving citizens, particularly youth, and to strengthen accountability mechanisms within the police force.

They expressed readiness to support the Nigerian Police Force in advancing reforms that promote justice and public trust.
