NANS Endorses NELFUND's Token Payment System for Tuition Fees

The National Association of Nigerian Students has thrown its support behind a new payment mechanism introduced by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. The body commenced testing of a tokenised system designed to address long-standing challenges in how tertiary institutions receive tuition support from loan beneficiaries.

The pilot phase began this week with the goal of eliminating a persistent problem: students being charged twice for the same fees. Under the previous arrangement, complications arose when refunds were needed, creating administrative headaches for both learners and institutions.

The tokenised approach allows students to send payments directly to their schools, creating a clearer transaction trail. NANS has called on universities and other tertiary institutions to process reconciliations of these payments without delay.

The student body warned that sluggish processing could result in learners being locked out of examination sittings and other essential academic activities. Prompt action by institutions is necessary to ensure that approved loans translate into actual access for students.

The new system represents an effort to bring greater clarity to interactions between loan disbursement agencies, educational institutions, and the students themselves. By enabling direct fund transfers and reducing duplicate billing, the mechanism aims to make the loan administration process more transparent and efficient across Nigeria's tertiary education sector.
