NANS Demands Action on Rising Transport Costs for Students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), specifically from the North-Central Zone, has urged the Federal Government and relevant petroleum regulators to tackle the rising petrol prices that are significantly affecting transportation costs for students. In a statement issued by the Coordinator, Abiola Babatunde, on Thursday, NANS warned that these rising costs are making education increasingly expensive.
The association called for the establishment of a dedicated student-support scheme by Aliko Dangote and the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery to alleviate the financial burden on students. NANS highlighted that fluctuations in petrol prices not only affect transportation but also increase costs for food and logistics, thereby putting additional financial pressure on students.
They noted that the recent price changes at Dangote Refinery, which included an increase from ₦1,265 to ₦1,350 per litre on September 12, 2026, followed by a reduction to ₦1,325 per litre on September 21, 2026, necessitate clearer communication regarding pricing factors. NANS proposed the creation of a Dangote Education Petroleum Trust Fund (DEPT-FUND) to provide ongoing support for students facing rising transportation costs.
