Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy Calls for Enhanced Ebola Readiness

The Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy has proposed a 10-point plan to strengthen Nigeria's preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease and other emerging infectious diseases. The Academy called for a coordinated national epidemic-readiness framework to be institutionalized and regularly assessed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

This initiative follows the Academy's policy report titled "From Awareness to Readiness: Strengthening Nigeria’s Preparedness for Ebola and Emerging Infectious Disease Emergencies," which was informed by discussions at a National Webinar on Ebola Preparedness held on August 20, 2026. Prof. Lere Baale, President and Chairman of the Governing Council, emphasized that past successes in containing Ebola should not lead to complacency.

The Academy proposed a continuous national system built around seven capabilities: anticipate, prevent, detect, respond, recover, learn, and improve. It also called for a nationwide audit of epidemic preparedness and highlighted the need to protect healthcare workers to ensure effective epidemic response.
