NASS Criticizes Government's Support for Livestock Sector

The National Assembly expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government's handling of the livestock industry, emphasizing that despite the establishment of a full-fledged Ministry of Livestock Development, the country still imports 65 million animals annually. Alhaji Idi Mukhta Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, reported a budget proposal of N70 billion for 2025, with only N20 billion released so far for 2024.

Senators, including Shehu Buba and Tahir Monguno, criticized the ministry's performance and called for President Bola Tinubu's urgent intervention. Senator Abdul Ningi accused the ministry of sabotage due to poor funding, which he claimed contradicts the government's aim to diversify the economy.

The committee emphasized the need for adequate funding to support livestock development, which is crucial for Nigeria's economic trajectory. The chairman of the committee, Senator Buba Shehu, highlighted the importance of the livestock sector for the nation's economy and urged immediate action.
