Nigeria's Livestock Ministry Targets N3.2 Trillion in Exports

The Nigerian Ministry of Livestock Development, led by Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha, is focused on boosting red meat export revenue, which is estimated at N3.2 trillion annually. During a defense of the ministry's 2025 budget before a joint committee of the National Assembly, Maiha disclosed that the ministry received N20 billion out of a requested N75 billion for 2024, with no budgetary releases expected for 2025 due to funding constraints.

The ministry aims to transform the livestock value chain, particularly by exporting grade meat products to generate internal revenue and stimulate economic growth. Nigeria has a large livestock population but currently earns minimal value from it.

To enhance participation in the global red meat market, the ministry is implementing a national livestock identification and traceability framework to track animals, prevent theft, and meet export standards. The ministry's initiatives also include developing feed and fodder, rehabilitating grazing reserves, and reducing seasonal migration to minimize conflicts and boost productivity.
