NASS Increases Presidential Campaign Limit to N10bn

The National Assembly of Nigeria has officially raised the presidential campaign spending limit to N10 billion in preparation for the 2027 elections, a substantial increase from the previous cap of N5 billion. This adjustment is part of the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

The new law, which aims to address current economic realities and the rising costs of political campaigns, also sets the governorship spending limit at N3 billion, up from N1 billion. Other revised spending caps include N500 million for Senate candidates, N250 million for House of Representatives candidates, and various limits for local government positions.

Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, emphasized that while the financial limits have been raised, statutory controls and safeguards to ensure the integrity of the electoral process will remain in place, including sanctions for candidates exceeding the prescribed spending thresholds. This reform is expected to significantly influence political strategies and fundraising efforts across the nation.
