Opeyemi Bamidele Proposes 182 Legislative Seats for Women

The National Assembly has proposed the creation of 182 additional legislative seats reserved for women as part of the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution. This includes 74 additional seats in the National Assembly, with 37 each in the Senate and House of Representatives, and 108 seats across the 36 state Houses of Assembly.
Each state would receive one additional seat for women in both the Senate and House of Representatives, and three in its House of Assembly. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), who is also the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, announced this proposal during the 2026 Law Week organized by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Ekiti State.
The proposal aims to expand women's legislative representation without affecting existing electoral constituencies. The special-seat arrangement is intended to last for 16 years, covering four electoral cycles, after which its effectiveness will be reviewed.
