National Assembly Advances State Police Bill to States

The National Assembly has transmitted the 2026 Constitution alteration bill, which proposes the establishment of state police, to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for their consideration and approval. The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, confirmed this development, stating that the bill was sent in accordance with Section 9 of the Constitution, which outlines the procedure for altering the nation's supreme law. The state legislatures are expected to communicate their resolutions within 30 days, although this timeframe is administrative and not a constitutional requirement.

For the amendment to be adopted, it must receive approval from at least two-thirds of the state legislatures, meaning a minimum of 24 states must agree. The proposal for state police has been a significant issue in the ongoing constitutional review process.
