Nigeria's National Grid Collapses, Power Generation Plummets to 139MW

The collapse of Nigeria's national grid resulted in a significant decrease in power generation to 139MW, impacting electricity distribution nationwide. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported a sharp decline in total generation from 2,052.37MW to 139.92MW within an hour, indicating a system-wide failure.

Various electricity distribution companies, including IBEDC and AEDC, faced challenges during the grid collapse. The incident was attributed to factors such as vandalism affecting gas availability for power generation facilities.

Nigeria's power sector continues to grapple with issues like poor investment, debt, electricity theft, and technical challenges, hindering the country's electrification plans.
