Nigerian Navy Aims to Maintain Zero Piracy Record

The Nigerian Navy, under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff Vice Adm Idi Abbas, has pledged to uphold its four-year record of zero reported piracy incidents in its territorial waters. This commitment was made during the graduation ceremony for participants of the Naval Warfare Course 10 at the Naval War College Nigeria in Calabar.

Vice Adm Abbas emphasized that this achievement reflects improved maritime security and highlighted the importance of persistent maritime domain awareness, credible presence at sea, regional cooperation, and timely response to sustain these gains. He noted that Nigeria's maritime security is critical to the nation's economic security, particularly concerning offshore resources and energy infrastructure.

The Navy is intensifying operations against crude oil theft and illegal mining, with Nigeria's crude oil production reaching approximately 1.56 million barrels per day in June 2026. Abbas urged the graduating officers to leverage emerging technologies and innovative strategies to enhance operational effectiveness and maintain security in the rapidly changing security environment.
