NBA president faults govs’ house, car gifts to judges, practice threat to judicial independence

NBA President Afam Osigwe criticized state governors for publicly gifting houses and cars to judges, which he believes undermines judicial independence. Osigwe stated in an interview that such gestures could compromise the impartiality of judges and create a perception of favoritism towards the executive branch.

He emphasized the need for the judiciary to receive proper budgetary allocations and for governors to respect the independence of the judicial arm of government. Osigwe called for state governments to follow the federal government's example in ensuring full financial autonomy for the judiciary.

Additionally, he addressed the issue of corruption within the legal profession, highlighting the importance of upholding professional standards and mentoring younger lawyers in ethical principles to combat financial crimes and maintain integrity in governance.
