NCAA Reports Over 60% Flight Disruptions in Nigeria

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) released operational statistics indicating that more than 60% of domestic flights were delayed or cancelled, raising concerns among passengers. Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines recorded the highest number of delays and cancellations.

While airlines are responsible for controllable issues, many delays stem from systemic challenges and external factors. The NCAA report primarily focused on delays and cancellations without addressing passenger load factors, airport constraints, weather disruptions, or infrastructure limitations.

Key challenges include inadequate apron space at major airports like Lagos and Abuja, leading to delays when aircraft cannot push back due to congestion. Additionally, Nigeria's aviation infrastructure lacks adequate navigational support, preventing safe operations in low-visibility conditions.

This results in holding, diversions, or cancellations, which negatively impact airline performance statistics. Bird strikes also pose a significant operational hazard.
