Nigeria's Airlines Face 60% Flight Delay Crisis

Nigeria's domestic air travel market is experiencing significant challenges, with a reported 60% delay rate in scheduled flights. According to data from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), out of 7,961 scheduled domestic flights, 4,765 (59.9 percent) were delayed, while cancellations were minimal at 0.45 percent.

High-volume carriers such as United Nigeria Airlines faced a delay rate of 76.6% across 1,231 flights, and Air Peace had a 71.4% delay rate for 1,864 flights. In contrast, smaller airlines like Umza Air achieved a low delay rate of 12.9%.

Experts indicate that chronic delays cannot be accepted as a norm and stress the need for structural reforms, including fleet discipline, slot allocation, and technology adoption. They suggest that airlines should align flight schedules with actual fleet capacity and utilize predictive management tools to mitigate delays.

A significant factor contributing to delays is the practice of overbooking tickets relative to operational capacity.
