NCC Registers 231 Million Devices to Combat Counterfeits

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has registered around 231 million telecommunications devices currently operating on Nigerian networks as part of its enforcement against counterfeit, cloned, and unapproved phones. Engr. Edoyemi Ogoh, the Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity at the NCC, announced during a media briefing in Abuja that existing subscribers do not need to register their devices again, while newly introduced devices must meet verification requirements.
The initiative aims to strengthen consumer protection, enhance network performance, and identify devices entering the market through unauthorized channels. The NCC is collaborating with the Nigeria Customs Service, original equipment manufacturers, importers, and relevant market associations to ensure devices are authenticated before sale.
The framework covers various SIM-enabled equipment, including smartphones and Point of Sale terminals. Under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, communications equipment must obtain regulatory Type Approval before use in Nigeria.
The NCC's Type Approval Business Rules were issued in August 2024, supporting the current compliance drive.
