NCC Calls for Investment Amid 47% Surge in Data Use

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), under the leadership of Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr Aminu Maida, has urged for heightened investment in telecommunications infrastructure as data consumption in Nigeria surged by nearly 47% within a year. This announcement was made on Tuesday during the Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum held in Abuja, organized in collaboration with Swedfund and Ookla.
Dr Maida reported that data consumption reached approximately 1.66 million terabytes in July 2026, compared to 1.13 million terabytes in July 2025. He emphasized the need for sustained investment to expand networks and enhance user experience, especially as reliance on cloud services and artificial intelligence grows.
The NCC has been working on improving investment conditions, including tariff adjustments and designating telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure. Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, noted that digital connectivity is vital for economic growth, contributing over 9% to Nigeria's GDP in early 2026.
