NCC Launches New Platform to Combat SIM Fraud

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) unveiled a plan to introduce a Telecom Identification Risk Management System aimed at curbing SIM-related fraud and enhancing digital security in Nigeria's digital economy. The announcement was made by the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, during a stakeholders' consultative forum in Abuja on Thursday.

The proposed platform will allow service providers to verify mobile numbers and flag suspicious fraudulent activities, thereby reducing exposure to fraud and improving account security. The NCC plans to amend its Quality of Service Business Rules to require telecom operators to notify subscribers at least 14 days before recycling their SIM cards.

This initiative reflects the NCC's commitment to a collaborative approach to address digital risks, with a focus on building trust in the digital ecosystem. The proposed amendments are set to be published on the NCC's website by February 2026, emphasizing the importance of transparency and consumer protection in the telecommunications sector.
