NCC Introduces Plan to Combat SIM Fraud in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), represented by Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida, announced plans to introduce a telecom identification risk management system aimed at curbing SIM-related fraud and enhancing digital security in Nigeria. This initiative was disclosed during a stakeholder consultation forum in Abuja.
The proposed platform will allow service providers to verify mobile numbers, flag suspicious fraudulent activities, and grant access to services, thereby reducing exposure to fraud and improving account security. The NCC plans to amend the quality of service business rules, requiring telecom operators to notify subscribers at least 14 days before deactivating inactive SIM cards.
This regulatory change is expected to improve transparency and protect consumers. The NCC emphasizes the importance of building trust in the digital economy, noting that digital trust is critical for the operation of a modern economy.
The consultation paper detailing these proposals is set to be published on the NCC's website by February 2026.
