NCDC Faces Criticism Over Disease Outbreak in Zamfara

An outbreak of an unidentified illness in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State has led to about 30 reported deaths. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has faced criticism for not providing timely information regarding the outbreak, which has raised public concern and speculation about a possible link to Ebola.
Dr Ahmad Muhammad Gusau, the Zamfara State epidemiologist, confirmed the deaths but stated that the cause of the illness remains unestablished, with affected individuals showing malaria-like symptoms. The Zamfara State Ministry of Health has deployed a rapid response team to investigate the situation, and samples from patients have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for testing.
The laboratory results are expected to determine if the illness is dengue fever, chikungunya, or another febrile disease. Dr Gusau noted that some fatalities involved patients with underlying conditions, complicating the assessment of the illness's impact.
The NCDC has yet to issue an official statement or confirm any independent investigation into the outbreak.
