Nigerian Correctional Service Denies Jailbreak Rumors in Edo State

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked rumors of a jailbreak at a prison in Edo State, specifically in Benin City. The NCoS dismissed the reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that no inmates escaped and there was no security breach at the custodial center.

The statement, signed by the Chief Superintendent of Corrections Jin Osuji, clarified that the allegations of three inmates, including two fraudsters and a person arrested in connection with the 2020 EndSARS protests, escaping on January 16, 2026, were completely unfounded. The NCoS expressed concern over media organizations spreading unverified information and assured the public, especially residents of Benin City and Edo State, that custodial facilities are secure with no threat to public safety.

The NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to safe custody, security, and rehabilitation of inmates, warning of legal action against those publishing false and malicious reports.
