NCoS CG Orders Probe into Kuje Prison Extortion Claims

On February 11, 2023, Sylvest Nwakuch, the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of extortion by officers at Kuje Prison. This directive followed a petition from lawyer Bala Dakum, who accused the officers of engaging in serious misconduct, including extorting inmates and abusing their rights.

Jane Osuji, a public relations officer at NCoS, confirmed the receipt of the petition and assured that the allegations would not be ignored. The petition detailed claims of systematic extortion, including unlawful payments for basic rights and privileges, which constitute serious violations of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act.

Dakum emphasized the need for an independent investigation and appropriate disciplinary actions against the implicated officers. He also mentioned that if no immediate action is taken, he would not hesitate to involve anti-corruption agencies.

The investigation aims to ensure the safety of inmates and uphold the integrity of the correctional system.
