Kwankwaso's Subsidy Proposal Gains Support from NDC and Obi

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the camp of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have expressed support for Vice-Presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso's proposal to reintroduce fuel subsidy in a different form if they win the 2027 elections. This support follows Kwankwaso's remarks during an interview with Arise TV, where he discussed the economic challenges stemming from the removal of the subsidy by President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, stated that the NDC would implement the subsidy "in our own way," suggesting investments in refineries and increased domestic production to ensure affordable petrol prices. He criticized Tinubu's immediate removal of the subsidy on May 29, 2023, which led to a sharp rise in petrol prices and increased living costs.

While Obi had previously indicated he would have removed the subsidy, he argued for a more organized approach. Mixed reactions have emerged regarding the alignment of Kwankwaso's and Obi's positions, with Obi's spokesman asserting there is no contradiction.
