NDLEA Enhances Canine Unit Training with German Experts

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) strengthened its Canine Unit with training conducted by German technical dog-handling experts Andreas Roscher and Jacqueline Shüler at the NDLEA Canine Unit Facility in Lagos. Eleven personnel participated, including the unit commander, two veterinary doctors, and eight dog handlers, along with their service dogs.

Five additional officers from NDLEA commands in Lagos also joined the training. The program covered advanced obedience, narcotics detection techniques, scent imprinting, and practical exercises simulating operational conditions at locations such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport, APM Terminals Apapa, and the MMIA NAHCO export shed.

NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.) stated that this collaboration exposed Nigerian handlers to international best practices and aimed to enhance their narcotics detection capabilities. He acknowledged existing manpower and logistical challenges within the Canine Unit and emphasized the need for annual refresher training to maintain and improve operational skills.
