Nigeria's Data Protection Personnel Gap Hits 480,000

The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has reported that Nigeria is facing a critical gap of 480,000 Data Protection Officers (DPOs) despite notable progress in the last three years. Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the NDPC boss, highlighted that while the number of certified DPOs has increased from fewer than 1,000 to 10,000, the country requires 500,000 data controllers and processors to meet the demand for data protection services.

The NDPC is intensifying efforts to bridge this gap through ongoing training programs aimed at positioning Nigeria as a hub for highly skilled data protection professionals in Africa. Dr. Tolu Fadip emphasized the importance of data protection in the digital economy, while Ms. Adeola Sopad outlined the foundational skills necessary for DPO certification.

The training program aims to equip participants with the skills needed to navigate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, thereby enhancing Nigeria's readiness for a digital economy.
